'Where did merengue go?' Olga Tañón fumes

Trouble in merengue-land has reached a new pitch as the Latin Grammys axed the Best Merengue Album category from its list of awards, starting with tomorrow’s show.
The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences quietly regrouped the upbeat Dominican rhythm under the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category, leaving internationally known merengueros such as Juan Luis Guerra, Milly Quezada and Olga Tañón in music limbo.
“It’s catastrophic. It feels like if [the Academy] was trying to erase us from the map,” three-time Latin Grammy and two-time regular Grammy winner Tañon told the Daily News on Friday. “Merengue has been an established music style for decades.”
Tañon, who is Puerto Rican, won the Best Merengue Album award in 2002. Other former winners in the now-defunct category are four Dominicans, Johnny Ventura, Chichi Peralta, Quezada and Guerra — both of whom have won it twice — and a Puerto Rican, Elvis Crespo.
“It’s a shame for the music industry,” added Tañon, who is up for Best Contemporary Tropical Album this year for “Exitos en Dos Tiempos.” “This genre has nurtured not only our lives but also that of our parents.”
Aida Scorza, the academy’s vice president of awards, explained that the category was scratched in January due to a shortage of submissions.
“For the past five years, the amount of entries in that field has diminished,” she said. “We’ve had only between seven and 11 entries submitted on a yearly basis, and we need [at least] 20 artists competing.”
But she added that the decision could be reversed in the future. “Reggaetón came in and took over the music scene,” said Scorza.
“But that doesn’t mean that merengue will not make a comeback. I think it will. And if it does, the doors will be open for it.”
This is not the first time the academy — which produces tomorrow’s Latin Grammy Awards in Houston — has eliminated, added or regrouped a category.
Another category that was regrouped this year was a Mexican rhythm, grupero. But the academy clearly specified in the list of nominees under Best Grupero Album that the “entries were combined this year in other categories.”
There was no similar note for the MIA merengue award.
Spanish radio listeners know that merengue has suffered under the current rule of urban music. Once one of the driving forces behind the ’90s tropical music movement, merengue is clearly losing its long-fought battle against hip hop, reggaetón and lately, bachata.
Yet, if the recent resurgence of bachata — a genre rooted in rural Dominican Republic — is any indication, perhaps merengue too can make its way back.
“It is the duty of all of those who sing this beautiful music to unite and create the new resurgence of merengue,” Tañon vowed.
“I’m only sure of one thing,” she added, “the public will never cease to sing and dance merengue.”

Problema en la tierra del merengue -ha alcanzado un nuevo punto al mismo tiempo que los premios Latin Grammys eliminaron la categoría de Mejor Album de Merengue del año a partir de la entrega de mañana (hoy) de los premios.
La academia ha reagrupado el contagioso ritmo dominicano en la categoría de Mejor Album Contemporaneo Tropical, dejando a merengueros internacionalmente conocidos como Juan Luis Guerra, Milly Quezada y Olga Tañón en el limbo.
"Es catastrofico, se siente como si nos quisieran borrar del mapa", dijo la tres veces ganadoras del Latin Grammy y dos veces ganadora regular de los premios al Daily News el viernes."El merengue ha sido un estilo de musica establecido por decadas".
Tañon,quie es Puertoriqueña, gano en el 2002 Mejor Album de Merengue.Otros que han ganado anteriormente, en la ahora eliminada-categoría son cuatro dominicanos, Johnny Ventura, Chichí Peralta,Quezada y Juan Luís Guerra, dos de los cuales han ganado dos veces, otro puertoriqueño también ha ganado, Elvis Crespo.
"Es una verguenza para la industria musical", agregó Olga Tañon quien esta nominada este año en la categoría de Mejor Album Contemporaneo Tropical con el álbum "Exitos en dos tiempos", este género no solo ha alimentado nuestras vidas sino también la de nuestros padres.
Aida Scorza, vicepresidenta de premios de la academia,explicó que la categoría fue sacada de los premios en enero debido a las pocas aplicaciones sometidas.Por los pasados cinco años el número de aplicaciones han disminuido, solamente teníamos entre siete y once aplicaciones, y por lo menos necesitamos veinte artistas compitiendo".
Pero agrego que la decision puede ser revertida en el futuro. El Regueton llego y se adueño del escenario musical.
Eso no significa que el merengue no vuelve de nuevo, y si no las puertas estaran abiertas.
Esta no es la primera vez que la academia, elimina, agrega o reagrupa una categoria.
Otra categoria que fue reagrupada este año fue el ritma Grupero mexicano,pero la academia lo especificó claramente en la lista de nominados bajo la categoria de mejor album grupero,y que las entradas este año fueron combinadas con otras categorias.
Pero con el merengue no hicieron lo mismo.
Oyentes de radio hispana coinciden que el merengue ha sufrido por el reinado de la musica urbana.El una vez poderoso merengue de los 90's , esta perdiendo la batalla frente al Hip Hop, el Regueton, y recientemente la bachata.El resurgimiento de la bachata puede ser un indicativo que el merengue puede resurgir de nuevo.
Es responsabilidad de todos aquellos que cantan esta bella musica,unirse y crear el nuevo resurgimiento del merengue"' expresó Olga Tañon.
"Estoy segura de una cosa",agrego, el publico nunca dejara de cantar y bailar merengue."
